About Science Demo Guy
My name is Josh Willoughby, and I’ve been teaching science for more than 20 years. I currently teach physical science, chemistry, and physics, and I’ve always especially enjoyed the hands-on side of science.
My original degree was in Civil Engineering, but after earning my bachelor’s degree, I decided to pursue teaching instead. It turned out to be a great fit. Over the years, I’ve seen again and again that students are often at their best when they’re out of their seats, working together, building something, testing an idea, solving a problem, and figuring out why something worked—or didn’t.
That experience is what led me to create Science Demo Guy.
The activities and STEM challenges I create are designed to be engaging for students while still being practical for teachers to use in a real classroom. Many combine science concepts with the engineering design process, giving students opportunities to collaborate, problem-solve, test designs, make improvements, and learn from failure.
I also know that teachers don’t need activities that require hours of preparation or impossible-to-find materials. My goal is to create resources that are hands-on, classroom-tested, easy to implement, and worth the time it takes to use them.
Science Demo Guy has also been a family project over the years. My wife, who has a background in graphic design, has helped with the look and design of many of the resources and this website. Our four children have also had the unusual experience of growing up around a lot of prototypes, science demonstrations, and STEM challenges—and have been willing test subjects more than a few times!
I’m always interested in feedback from teachers who use my resources. Some of the best improvements come from hearing what worked well and what could be made clearer or easier to use.
