BUilding An Electromagnet
This Demonstration is included in a bundle of 101 Science Demonstrations & Experiments. You can find this bundle here in my TpT Store. These exciting demonstrations use mostly inexpensive materials that you can find around your home or can be easily purchased. I show how to run the demonstration, give helpful advice and explain the science concepts behind it. Many of these demonstrations can be turned into STEM projects for your students. Materials needed:
Copper Wire & Scissors
Nail (large)
Battery (D size, 1.5 volts)
Metal items such as washers, nails, paper clips etc.
Directions:
- Loop copper wire around a nail 20 times (give or take a few)
- Touch both ends of the wire to the ends of your battery. Now current is running through the nail and has become a magnet because of electricity…and electro magnet!
- Test your magnet on the metal items you have collected.
The Science Behind this Experiment:
How does this work? If you have a current carrying wire, there is a magnetic field around it. The more loops you have in this wire, and the stronger the electrical current, the stronger the electromagnetic field will be. Your electro magnet is powered by the electrical current flowing through the wire, creating a magnetic field.
