Kindergarten Life Science Activity: My Bean Plant

Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive
***Note, this activity is not meant to comprehensively cover this standard but rather to introduce or compliment the instruction of the standard as a whole.
In this activity, students will observe how plants need light and water in order to germinate. Germination is when an organism (a living thing) grows from a seed (or a similar structure). The most common example of germination is when a seedling sprouts from the seed of a plant.
Materials needed:
• 1 sandwhich ziplok bag
• 2-3 dry pinto bean seeds
• 1 damp paper towel
Instructions:
1. Pass out supplies per person or station
2. Label baggies with student name(s) with a sharpie
3. Direct students to fold their paper towel so that it fits into the bag
4. Adult assistance is best for getting the towel wet and putting into the bag
5. Direct students to place their beans on the paper towel in the bag and then seal the bag
6. Direct students to cut out their recording sheet and paste into their notebook
Two weeks is a good duration of time to watch the seeds germinate and grow. Have students draw their seedling on their notebook page on 4 different days. I would recommend (approx) day #1, #5, #9 & #14
