Making Icecream

Materials needed:

• Half and Half
• Ice
• Rock Salt
• Sugar
• Vanilla Extract
• ZipLok Bags (Gallon Size & Quart Size, Double Sealed)

Directions:

1. Fill Gallon sized bag about half full with ice (4-5 Cups).
2. Add in about 1 Cup of Rock Salt
3. Shake it around a little bit and then set it off to the side.
4. Add the following ingredient inside into the quart size bag:

• 1/2 Cup Half and Half
• 2 Tablespoons Sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• 2 Tablespoons Sugar
• 1/2  teaspoon of vanilla

8. Seal the bag while squeezing most of the air out. You’ll want a VERY good seal.
9. Slide the quart size bag into the gallon size bag with the ice. Seal the gallon size bag while squeezing the air out of it.
11. Squeeze and move the mixture around in the bag for about 5 minutes.
12. Scoop and Enjoy!

The Science Behind this Experiment:

If we take this mixture and place it in the freezer it will get hard and become solid after, maybe, an hour. We can also hand mix it with an ice-salt mixture that will speed up the freezing process. By putting salt with the ice, the freezing point will move lower. This is a colligative property called “freezing point depression”.
