I saw the sun today! Well, almost. It was just behind a thin layer of clouds. I definitely saw a few patches of blue sky though…almost forgot what that looks like! We’re experiencing a gray spell here in Southwest Michigan! It’s been pretty much cloudy, dreary, and wet for a couple of weeks now, so it was really good to almost see the sun. The 10-day forecast shows more of the same! If you’re feeling a little down after days without seeing the sun, you’re not alone and it’s not just your imagination. Many people feel sad and lonely with cloudy dreary weather, it’s a real thing. It should go without saying that it also is going to affect our students! They get a little less focused, less motivated, and less ready to learn. The weather can make a big impact on the overall atmosphere in our classrooms! Here are some great ways to fight the winter blues!
1. Mood lighting. I’m serious here. A few bistro or Christmas lights can go a long way.
2. Aroma Therapy. Put a candle (up high) on a candle warmer and let your favorite “baking” scent fill your room with it’s sweet joyful goodness.

3. Get them up and moving! If the gym is free, go down and play a quick game or have them run a couple of laps, do situps, pushups, and jumping-jacks. Just a little time can make a difference.

4. Use some extra outside-time to play games as a class. Even without the sun shining, the kids are still getting some UV rays, a little exercise, and a break from the usual routine. Don’t worry about snow pants and boots, keep them on the blacktop and have them wear their coats, hats, and gloves if it’s cold. Keep it short and sweet. This is even easier with older kids.
5. Winter STEM Activities! Yes! Something a little different and fun breaking up the day. You want to look for activities that involve group problem-solving and following the engineering process! Here are some great activities that use SIMPLE and inexpensive materials that are super-easy to find.

6. Have something for them to look forward to and plan for. Maybe a snow sculpture competition on Friday as a reward for good behavior. Throw an indoor classroom beach day party, use a little class time to brainstorm ideas and get the kids involved in creating decorations and running stations! This could be a fun “book buddy” activity where you include older kids in the mix and read books about summer beach time!
